Ford’s small car followed the front-wheel-drive, transverse-engine route that was becoming the new norm in the 1970s. Development had begun in 1969, after Ford of Europe managed to convince Dearborn that an all-new car was necessary. A new Spanish factory was built for the car, which was launched in 1976. The Ford Fiesta, as it was named, was an instant hit and became one of Ford’s best known, best selling and long-lived product lines. The original model was sold Stateside, before being replaced by the Escort; and the Mk VII also headed back there as Ford’s new B-segment model until the company decided to focus on trucks, SUVs and the Mustang only. The Mk VIII, made only in Germany, would prove to be the last.
