The nameplate, however, continued in some markets, such as the US, Canada and South Africa, in interim years, denoting a booted Golf. Usually sold as a more upmarket car than the basic Golf, bridging the gap between the hatchback and the larger Passat, but with nearly identical mechanicals and dynamics.
