Touted as first all-Indian car (if one acknowledges [[Hindustan Ambassador (1959–2014)|Hindustan Ambassador]]’s [[Morris Oxford III]] roots), though styling mostly by I.DE.A of Italy. Original 1·4-litre engine derived from [[Peugeot]] design. Smart hatchback styling, noted for being particularly roomy. Originally hampered by quality niggles, leading Tata to rush revised V2 into production (from 2001). Tata brand formerly appeared on trucks and SUVs, with Indica not regarded as well built as comparable [[Hyundai]]s and [[Maruti]]s. Generally good handling, road noise its main issue. Remained in production despite launch of [[Tata Indica Vista|Indica Vista]], second-generation model, from 2008. Booted model and wagon called [[Tata Indigo (2002–10)|Tata Indigo]] (''q.v.''). Badge-engineered as [[CityRover]] from 2003 to 2005.
