Mazda Familia 1500XL.jpg

Mazda Familia (BD). 1980–8 (prod. n/a). 3-, 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, 1071, 1296, 1490 cm³ (I4 OHC). Developed in conjunction with Ford. Sold as Mazda 323 in export markets, Mazda GLC (Great Little Car) in North America. The one that put Mazda on the map and sold with Ford Laser twin in Asia-Pacific markets. Uninspiring but better engineered than many western small cars and a leap ahead of 1977 Familia. Different grilles for sedan in Japan, one resembling that on Australian Ford Meteor (1981–5); the other as exported on 323. Japan had six-light five-door hatchback in addition to four-light. Car of the Year in Japan for 1980–1. Still on the rough side and noisy. Refresh in 1982 addressed some issues. Japanese production ceased 1984; Colombian production 1984–8.

Manufacturing locations: Hiroshima, Japan; Hofu, Japan; Bogotá, Colombia

Marque: Mazda | Model: Mazda Familia | Predecessor: Mazda Familia (FA4), Mazda Grand Familia | Successor: Mazda Familia (BF)

q.v. Ford Laser (1980–5)
