Chrysler of South Africa switches from US bodies derived from the [[Plymouth Valiant (1967–73)]] to larger Australian ones, which appeared bigger, and were called ‘fast body’ there. The first South African Valiants were similar to the [[Chrysler Valiant (VH)]], but with the Slant-6 instead of the Hemi unit; no V8s were offered. Rebel automatic called 660. Electronic ignition in 1973. Round headlights replaced rectangular ones in 1974, a year after the [[Chrysler Valiant (VJ)|VJ]]s made their début in Australia with a similar change. Front vent windows removed in 1975, another VJ touch. Chrysler nameplates appeared in 1976, and [[Chrysler Valiant (VK)|VK]]-style grille appeared at the same time. Regal gained the VIP grille in 1976, with some equipment improvements. VIP had a vinyl roof and more equipment; Safari was essentially the Regal wagon, with fake wood grain along the sides added in 1975 on the premium model. Sales peaked in 1973 for all models, and had a noticeable decline as the fuel crisis set in: the use of the larger bodies kept buyers away.
