Revision as of 21:34, 5 March 2010BMW 507. 1956–9 (prod. 254 approx.). 2-door convertible. F/R, 3168 cm³ (V8 OHV). Inspired by US BMW importer Max Hoffman, the 507 was meant to help revive the company’s fortunes by being an expensive, premium sports car to rival Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198). Based on 502. Engine outputted 150 hp, 165 hp in US; claimed 136 mph. Limited boot space, though a smaller tank was later fitted as an option. High price (US$10,500 and DM 26,500, plus an additional DM 1,000 if a hardtop was ordered) meant that it never took off and BMW lost money on each one sold, contributing to its dire finances at the end of the 1950s.
