From AutocadeAustin Mini Metro/Austin Metro (LC8). 1980–5 (prod. 2,078,218 for 1980–98 incl. successors and Rover 100). 3-door saloon. F/F, 998, 1275 cm³ (I4 OHV). Hugely anticipated replacement for ageing Mini, though in the end the Mini survived it. Glassy hatchback, with some curves as designer David Bache believed the folded-paper era was over. Some concessions to older technology from Mini, but on the face a fresh, contemporary hatchback. Supported by advertising showing Mini Metro beating foreign competition, using patriotic theme. Mini tag dropped for 1982; model line rejigged for 1982 with Vanden Plas model at top end. Sales’ success as it seemed BL had put things right, with steady improvements through the decade.
