The 90, 110 and 127 gain a name, but it’s much the same formula under the skin. Defender 90, 110 and 130 became the new designations. Rough, unrefined and rugged, lacking modern comforts—unsurprising given its roots were in the 1940s. ‘Hardtop’ panel van version also available for commercial use; not covered here. New 2·5 turbodiesel at launch of Defender name, reworked in 1994 to 300 Tdi with the same capacity. The 2·8 was a South African model. Five-cylinder turbodiesel from 1998. Further revisions in 2007, with full-width dashboard and new 2·4 Ford diesel, meeting emissions’ legisation; last major round in 2012 as 2·2 replaced 2·4 for Euro V standards.
