Latest revision as of 01:34, 26 December 2016Volvo 960. 1990–7 (prod. 1,430,000 approx., including 740, 760, 940 and S90). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate, 4-door LWB saloon, 4-door limousine. F/R, 1986 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2316 cm³ petrol, 2383 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2473, 2922 cm³ (I6 DOHC). Development of 760, with sleeker grille accomplished by raising the front bumper. Changes at rear, smoothing out the earlier car’s perpendicular looks. Two-litre turbo for Italy and Japan only. Executive model at top of range, bought for official and taxi usage; stretched limousine model also available. As with 940, thirsty—boxy shape did not help. Despite boxy looks, actually not that commodious down the back, LWB models excepted. Average on most other measures, appealing to those who liked Volvo’s slightly backward, unchanging values at the time. Facelifted 1995. Renamed S90 and V90 in 1997, but barely changed from this generation.
