Front-wheel-drive supermini, launched in the mid-1970s as a response to cars such as the Renault 5 and Fiat 127, and in the wake of economic recession. Launched on both sides of the Atlantic and pushed by Ford president Lee Iacocca. Highly successful entry for Ford, at least in Europe, where the nameplate has been present continuously since 1975. Among UK’s top 10 best sellers since 1977. Supersport model 1980, XR2 with large round headlights in 1981. Millionth Fiesta built 1979; two millionth 1981. Facelift to Mk II in late 1983.
