Zastava 101/Yugo 1·1/Yugo 1·3/Yugo Skala/Zastava Skala (128 b1). 1970–2008 (prod. 1,045,458). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 1116, 1290, 1301 cm³ (I4 OHC). Hatchback version of the Fiat 128, aimed principally at Eastern Bloc countries, and also assembled for some years in Poland by FSO. Developed originally at Fiat and styled under Dante Giacosa, but rejected for production by Fiat. Very advanced at the time of launch, with front-wheel drive, independent suspension, space-efficient interior, and OHC engines. Appeared first in the press in December 1970, with formal launch at Beograd in April 1971. First refresh in 1979, with specification and visual updates and introduction of three-door (originally dubbed Mediterranean). Many changes in 1983, including the later-type Fiat 128 dashboard for the 101 GTL. Some new trim levels. GT and GTL received a more comfortable and lower suspension. Yugo emerged as an export marque in 1983, formally adopted on the home market in 1987. Model name Skala from 1988, along with further improvements, with upscale Skala 65 getting a five-speed gearbox, stabilizer bar and new carburettor. Three-door discontinued in 1990. Difficulty with parts’ supply during the Yugoslavian conflict, falling to 772 cars made in 1993. From 1994, the five-speed and stabilizer bar were adopted across the Skala range. Zastava brand reclaimed in 2002, and the range became Zastava Skala. New instrument panel and digital odometer, speedometer and rev counter, from 2007, with Fiat Seicento external mirrors, among other changes. Sales dropped in the 2000s, with Skala now one of the cheapest cars in the world on sale.
