Volvo 850. 1991–7 (prod. unknown). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, F/A, 1984, 2435 cm³ petrol, 2461 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC), 1984, 2319, 2435 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Another boxy Volvo, but the model that marked the turning-point for the staid Swedish brand, thanks to an ex-Saab boss who had joined the firm. Hot T-5 versions, with 225 PS, saw 850 in touring car championship races, gaining a performance image for the company. First mass-produced car with transverse inline five-cylinder engine. Mid-term facelift in 1994, T-5R limited edition performance model in 1995. R model in 1996, with 250 PS, and four-wheel-drive from 1997.
