From AutocadeVolkswagen Polo (Typ 86). 1975–81 (prod. 500,000 approx.). 3-door saloon. F/F, 771, 895, 1093, 1272 cm³ (4 cyl. OHC). Rebadged version of Audi 50, slotting in under Golf. Well engineered small car, though in Volkswagen guise, the basic models were less well equipped than the Audi, with rubber mats, and single-speed wiper and fan. Steadily upgraded during production run. N and L to begin with; LS from 1976 and GLS from 1978. Spun off booted version called Derby. Mid-term facelift with larger plastic bumpers in 1979, along with new trim levels. Formel E economy model in final year, with fuel savings encouraged through gearing.
