Volkswagen Derby. 1977–81 (prod. 370,000 incl. Derby II). 2-door saloon. F/F, 895, 1093, 1272 cm³ (I4 OHC). Audi-developed, booted version of Volkswagen Polo I, building on strengths of that model: big-car refinement in a small-car package. Originally outsold Polo in first year, but sales dropped soon after as hatchbacks became more popular. Formel E economy model in final year, with fuel savings encouraged through gearing.
