Booted version of the Volkswagen Golf, sold in Germany and most markets from 1979 to 1992, and from 2005 on. The nameplate, however, continued in some markets, such as the US, Canada and South Africa, in interim years, denoting a booted Golf. Usually sold as a more upmarket car than the basic Golf, bridging the gap between the hatchback and the larger Passat, but with nearly identical mechanicals and dynamics.
