Volkswagen Jetta/Volkswagen Fox (Typ 16/A1). 1979–98 (prod. 571,030 in Germany only). 2- and 4-door saloon. F/F, 1093, 1272, 1297, 1457, 1588, 1595, 1716, 1781 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Booted counterpart to Volkswagen Golf I, launched at IAA in 1979. Positioned more highly than Golf, though mechanically identical. Rust protection, which helped with quality; and GLi at top of range, a luxury model parallel to Golf’s GTi. Called Atlantic in México. German production to 1984, but the car continued in South Africa, renamed the Fox so as not to be confused with Jetta II. South African production to late 1990s.
