A fresh start for Toyota, replacing Starlet and Tercel lines in most markets with a cute, Sotiris Kovos-designed supermini. Simple interior with central speedometer for most models. Japanese Car of the Year for 1998–9. Diesel from 2002. A better all-rounder than Honda Fit (GD), though not as roomy. Three-box sedan sold as Toyota Platz, sold in most non-Japanese markets as Yaris, and Echo in North America and Australasia.
