Renault 21 (X48). 1986–96 (prod. 2,096,000 approx.). 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, F/A, 1397 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1397, 1565, 1721, 1995, 2165 cm³ petrol, 1870, 2068 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC). Mid-sized family car from Renault. Turbo models fairly quick, though quality not its strongest suit, especially compared with contemporary Opel Vectra A. Facelifted 1989, when five-door and four-wheel-drive Quadra versions added. European production of saloons to 1994, estates to 1995; to 1996 in Turkey (with Manager, Concorde and Optima trims); continued in South America till 1997. Formed basis of US-market Renault Medallion (later Eagle Medallion).
