Opel Kadett (Projekt 1865/T-car). 1973–9 (prod. 1,700,000 approx., incl. 1,332 Aero). 2-, 3- and 4-door saloon, 3-door estate, 2-door coupé, 2-door cabriolet. F/R, 993, 1196 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1584, 1897, 1979 cm³ (4 cyl. CIH). GM world car, engineered by Opel, with conventional design, launched at Frankfurt 1973. Despite conventional engineering—with carryover bits from its predecessor—it was considered more competitive than Volkswagen products at launch, and helped Opel raise its profile. Roomier than Kadett B, though rear still cramped based on some reports. Very good handling, with a little understeer. One-litre model in early 1974 as fuel crisis hit, and upgrades to compete with Volkswagen Golf I in 1975. Hatchback model, Kadett City (sometimes listed as Opel City), from 1975, and sporting GT/E model later that year at Frankfurt show. Mid-term revisions in 1977, with mild facelift, and uprated GT/E featuring injected two-litre from Rekord. Rarest Kadett C, the Aero, featured a cabriolet top, and was converted by Baur, from 1976 to 1978.
