1983 Mercury Lynx RS.jpg

Mercury Lynx. 1981–7 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/F, 1598, 1859 cm³ petrol, 1998 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Rebadged, upscale version of US Ford Escort, at one point Mercury’s best selling model. Diesel from Mazda, from 1984, but unpopular as fuel crisis panic wore off; 1·9 from 1985 as 1·6 deleted. CVH petrol engines considered harsh. Turbo 1·6 option in 1984–5. Inoffensive, as with Escort.

Manufacturing locations: Wayne, Michigan, USA; Oakville, Ontario, Canada; Hermosillo, Sonora, México

Marque: Mercury | Predecessor: Mercury Bobcat | Successor: Ford Laser (1985–9) (as Mercury Tracer)
