Underdeveloped rival to the Mini, compromised by poor build quality at Linwood plant and complex assembly (engine castings made at Linwood, sent 300 miles to Ryton for machining, then sent back to be put into the cars). Extremely costly for Rootes, leading to takeover by Chrysler. Revision in 1966, effectively creating Mk II. Coupé called Californian (1965–70), with lower roofline and sleeker rear window; estate, covered separately, called Hillman Husky.
Marque: Hillman | Successor: Chrysler Sunbeam
