Hugely anticipated replacement for ageing Mini, though in the end the Mini survived it. Glassy hatchback, with some curves as designer David Bache believed the folded-paper era was over. Some concessions to older technology from Mini, but on the face a fresh, contemporary hatchback. Supported by advertising showing Mini Metro beating foreign competition, using patriotic theme. Mini tag dropped in 1981; model line rejigged for 1982.
Marque: Austin | Model: Austin Metro | Predecessor: Mini Clubman | Successor: Austin Metro
