With the 100 series looking tired, and with Audi’s desire to rival BMW with a three-tiered saloon model range, the A6 designation was conceived as its mid-line entry. (The A4–A6–A8 division would prove more logical than the previous 80–100–V8 trio.) Initially a renamed 100, the definitive A6 was launched in 1997, setting an individual style template distinct from the A4 and A8. Now on to the third-generation model, Audi has successfully established the A6 as a credible rival to the BMW 5er-Reihe and Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse.
