Short-lived car marque from General Motors, created to fight the Japanese competition, with the Honda Accord its primary aim. Founded 1985, but the first Saturns did not roll off the production line in a new factory in Spring Hill, Tenn., till 1990. No-haggle pricing considered innovative, and Saturn became known for good customer service. It was one of the first GM brands on the World Wide Web, and built a community of owners. However, as Saturn expanded beyond its original product line, it began resembling just another GM unit, and it even began selling cars with the same design as those from Opel. The Opel Astra H was ultimately imported and sold as a Saturn. With GM’s troubles in 2008, Saturn was slated for the scrapheap. Penske expressed an interest in taking over the brand, but the deal fell through, and the last Saturns were built in 2009.
