Opel Ascona/Vauxhall Cavalier (J-car). 1981–8 (prod. n/a). 2-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door convertible. F/F, 1297, 1598, 1796, 1998 cm³ petrol, 1598 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Ascona goes front-drive as part of GM’s global J-car project, and makes a stronger play for the mid-sized segment. In the UK, a very successful move for Vauxhall. Estate for Vauxhall model only, with rear end made by Holden of Australia for its Camira. Refined with strong performing OHC engines, and quite a step forward from rivals from Ford, Talbot and Fiat. Diesel from Isuzu. Replaced by Vectra in most markets, but Monza, a version of the Opel Kadett E, took over in South Africa.
