Toyota flagship (with the exception of the Century), with the aim of producing a luxury sedan with no relation to the bread-and-butter models, and a true rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse. In many respects, Toyota succeeded, and the top Celsiors—sold outside Japan as the Lexus LS—won plenty of buyers in the US market. Europe proved harder to crack. In 2003, Toyota announced that the fourth-generation Celsior would bear the Lexus badge at home, ending 17 years of the model line in 2006.

Marque: Toyota | Successor: Lexus LS
