Pontiac LeMans/Pontiac Luxury LeMans. 1968–72 (prod. n/a). 2- and 4-door sedan, 4-door hardtop, 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible, 5-door wagon. F/R, 250 in³ (I6 OHV), 250 in³ (I6 OHC), 350, 400, 455 in³ (V8 OHV). Very wide range of intermediates, with Coke-bottle styling. Wagon added in first year. Much the same as Chevrolet Chevelle (1968–72), but with better handling, though less reliable than other GM corporate intermediates, Buick Skylark (1968–72) and Oldsmobile Cutlass (1968–72). More power for 350 in 1969, the final year for the high-performance version of the engine; it was also the final year of the acclaimed Sprint 6 OHC unit, which had become too expensive to produce, and Americans were ordering cars with air conditioning and other options, unsuited to the engine. Range extended downwards beginning in the 1970 model year, absorbing Tempest Custom, and OHC replaced with Chevrolet OHV six. In 1971, the Tempest line disappeared altogether, with the T-37 now part of the LeMans line, and all engines detuned to run on lower-octane petrol. T-37 replaced by base LeMans for 1972; GTO became an option package. Luxury LeMans introduced for 1972 to jump-start sales, with the new A-bodies having been delayed due to a fall 1970 strike. It worked, even if LeMans sales were down overall from the mid- to late-1960s.
