Peugeot 404. 1960–91 (prod. 1,847,568 in France; plus 2,885,374 elsewhere). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door utility. F/R, 1468, 1618 cm³ petrol, 1948 cm³ diesel (I4 OHV). Pinin Farina-styled range of family cars, known for ruggedness, on 403 underpinnings. Shorter, lower and narrower, though with comparable interior room; 72 ch 1·6 delivered 30 mpg (Imperial). Often compared with BMC’s Farina saloons and Fiat 1800, from the same studios. Saloon initially; estate and Familiale seven-seater from 1962. Elegant coupé and convertible (1962–9) covered separately. Petrol fuel injection and diesel from 1964. Four-speed gearbox, considered advanced. Range began shrinking as 504 came on stream in 1969. European passenger car production to 1975, utility sold in France till 1979. Argentinian production 1962–81, with utility from 1973 to 1979. Continued thereafter in Africa under licence.
