Opel Rekord. 1966–72 (prod. 1,274,362). 2- and 4-door saloon, 3- and 5-door estate, 2-door coupé, 3-door van. F/R, 1492, 1698, 1897 cm³ (I4 CIH), 2239 cm³ (I6 CIH). Rekord C finally makes its début, after its four-cylinder engines appeared in the Rekord B the year before. Adopted coke-bottle styling theme. Sixty mm longer wheelbase, improved double wishbone independent front suspension, and five-link axle at rear; dual-circuit brake system now on all models. Crumple zones and telescopic steering column introduced. Four-cylinder units improved. Six-cylinder cam-in-head engine replaced prewar unit. Ten millionth Opel made during Rekord C’s run—a Caravan estate model. Formed the basis of the Opel Commodore A (which eventually supplanted the Rekord six), Ranger A, Chevrolet Opala, and Opel Olímpico and Fiera in México (like the Opala, Rekords with Chevrolet engines).
