1972 Ford Pinto.jpg

Ford Pinto. 1971–80 (prod. over 3,000,000). 2- and 3-door sedan, 3-door wagon. F/R, 98 in³ (I4 OHV), 122, 140 in³ (I4 OHC), 171 in³ (V6 OHV). Infamous subcompact, meant to be a rival to Volkswagen Käfer (1960–80). Government recall affected 1971–6 models, where there was a risk of fuel filler necks and fuel tanks failing if the car was struck from behind, due to poor design. Built to a price, and not that great to begin with: poor ride, cramped for passengers and luggage, heavy steering, but acceptable handling. Twinned with Mercury Bobcat.

Manufacturing locations: St Thomas, Ontario, Canada; Edison, New Jersey, USA; Richmond, California, USA

Marque: Ford | Successor: Ford Escort (1981–90)
