1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible.jpg

Ford Galaxie. 1965–8 (prod. n/a). 2- and 4-door sedan, 2- and 4-door hardtop sedan, 2-door convertible, 2-door coupé, 2-door fastback coupé. F/R, 240 in³ (I6 OHV), 289, 302, 352, 390, 427, 428 in³ (V8 OHV). All-new model with stacked headlights, with more bulk, offering solid family transportation. Leaf springs replaced with three-link coils at rear, with much improved ride and handling, though with the size and weight, it could hardly be called agile. Much quieter, too, especially the top model, called the Galaxie 500 LTD. XL continued with bucket seats, though most had three-speed automatics rather than the four-speed manual. The 7 Litre model (428 in³) emerged in 1966, with the Thunderbird engine, and was better for lazy cruising than the racing 427. LTD spun off into its own line that year. Refreshed 1967s saw turn signals moved from the grille to the bumper, with more safety, including a padded hub in the centre of the steering wheel, an energy-absorbing steering column, and padded surfaces; XL spun off into its own line. Horizontal headlamps for 1968 with more substantial facelift; 289 replaced by 302. Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan and Country Squire based on Galaxie line.
