Ford Cortina Mk III. 1970–6 (prod. 1,126,559 all versions). 2- and 4-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door pick-up, 2-door convertible by Crayford. F/R, 1298, 1593 (I4 OHV), 1593, 1993 (I4 OHC), 2495 cm³ (V6 OHV), 200, 250 in³ (6 cyl. OHV). Known as the Cortina TC (Taunus Cortina), due to cooperation between British and German Ford branches and closely related to contemporary German Taunus, but with more pronounced “coke-bottle” styling. Some connection with American Pinto. No longer than Mk II but larger wheelbase. Ford made much of its association with racing driver Jackie Stewart for the Mk III launch. Executive (2000E) model added 1973. South African models sported the Essex 2495 cm³ V6, while Australian TCs had 200 and 250 in³ engines from the Ford Falcon to compete with Holden Torana (these are identified with twin headlights). Australian sixes have scary handling as a result of being nose-heavy, unpredictable under heavy braking. Mid-life refresh in 1973, referred to as TD in Australia. Crayford built two-door cabriolet versions; bakkie pick-up truck from South Africa dubbed P100.
