Citroën AX (Projet S9). 1986–98 (prod. 2,425,138). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, F/A, 954, 1124, 1294, 1360 cm³ petrol, 1360, 1527 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Smart, rational AX was conventionally engineered but had plenty of Citroën brand flavour looks-wise. Short bonnet length hints at car’s development origins as a one-box car. Promoted using TV campaign with actress Janet Mas and Red Chinese scenes. Good seller: millionth example built 1990. Good power from 1·4, mostly good handling range; diesels very economical. Facelift in 1991 relatively minor outside but smarter facia inside. Replaced by Saxo, which had a related floorpan, but tooling used in Malaysia into 2000 as Proton Tiara.
Marque: Citroën | Predecessors: Citroën 2CV, Citroën Visa, Citroën LNA, Talbot Samba, Oltcit (1981–94) | Successor: Citroën Saxo
