1971 AMC Gremlin.jpg

AMC Gremlin. 1971–8 (prod. 671,475 incl. 40,994 V8). 3-door sedan. F/R, 1984 cm³ (4 cyl. OHC), 232, 258 in³ (6 cyl. OHV), 304 in³ (V8 OHV). First American subcompact car, considered stylish and a good import-fighter when new. Really an abbreviated AMC Hornet, with a foot taken out of the wheelbase, leaving marginal rear seat room. Noisy, poor ride, not the best finish, yet cheap and mechanically simple. V8 from 1972 to 1976. Minor sheetmetal changes for 1977. Audi engine for 1977–8, but poor performance. México’s VAM built Gremlins, too, and the later AMC Spirit appeared under the Gremlin name as well.

Manufacturing locations: Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA; Brampton, Ontario, Canada; Ciudad de México, México

Marque: AMC | Successor: AMC Spirit
