Volkswagen Passat (B5).jpg

Volkswagen Passat (B5). 1996–2005 (prod. 4,119,437). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate, 4-door LWB saloon. F/F, F/A, 1595, 1984 cm³ petrol, 1896, 1968 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1781, 1984 cm³ petrol (I4 DOHC), 2324 cm³ petrol (V5 DOHC), 2771 cm³ petrol, 2496 cm³ diesel (V6 DOHC). Volkswagen discovers style. After years of the Passat being a worthy but dull entry, the B5 Passat—sharing a platform with the Audi A4—proudly displays the VW logo, has flares over the wheelarches, and a curved roof hinting at the New Beetle. It set the style for fin de siècle mainstream saloons, with the Ford Mondeo Mk III (CD132) its most flattering imitator. Highly successful for Volkswagen, winning numerous awards in first years. Mid-term facelift in 2001. Shanghai–VW joint venture produced long-wheelbase model, which formed the basis of the Škoda Superb (2001–8) (q.v. Volkswagen Passat Lingyu).
