From AutocadeVolkswagen Karmann Ghia 1500/Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1500 S/Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1600 L (Typ 34). 1961–9 (prod. 42,505). 2-door coupé. R/R, 1493, 1584 cm³ (F4 OHV). The “large” Karmann Ghia, not a replacement for the Typ 14, but a larger counterpart on the Typ 3 platform, and served as Volkswagen’s flagship for most of its production life. Considered not a “real” sports by Volkswagen, who marketed it as a “ladies’ sports’ car”. Débuted at Frankfurt 1961. Series production from 1961, originally with 45 PS; 1500 S from 1963 with two carburettors and higher compression, delivering 54 PS. Final evolution was 1600 S from 1965; 1966 saw 12 V electrics and dual-circuit braking. Fully automatic transmission from 1967 with semi-trailing arm rear axle; manual cars gained the semi-trailing arm from 1968. Convertibles were planned but only got to pilot production stage, with 16 made; a single fastback prototype was produced. Never as successful as Typ 14 and deleted during the earlier car’s run.
