Entry-level Toyota, originally conceived as Japanese answer to the Volkswagen Käfer. Very spartan at launch, but posher versions soon followed, which buyers favoured. The original was facelifted in 1966, with a larger engine installed; a second-generation model followed at the end of the decade, effectively a shortened Corolla.
