After cancelling a Subaru 1500 prototype, having determined that Fuji Heavy Industries was in no shape to combat Toyota, the company took the lessons into a more compact model, codenamed A-4 (later 63-A). Emphasis on handling and refinement, with innovative approaches to making the front-drive format work, including the double-offset joint. Four-wheel independent suspension. Shown in 1965, mass production from 1966 with A522 four-door. Three-point seat belts optional from October 1966. Two-door A512 from February 1967; both models integrated into single A12 model code with minor revisions in June 1967. Four-door van from September, two-door Sports Sedan from November. A two-door van (A41) appeared in 1968. Floor gearshift began appearing in 1968.
