Renault Encore. 1984–6 (prod. 600,000 approx. sold incl. Alliance). 3-, and 5-door sedan. F/F, 1397 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1721 cm³ (I4 OHC). Hatchback follow-up to successful Renault Alliance, based on Renault 11. Stylish and space-efficient, with front-wheel drive. Same formula: exterior followed French model, interior US-designed. Contributed some 50,000 units to first model year’s sales, but, as with Alliance, suffered from the US market shifting back to larger cars by the middle of the decade. Absorbed into Alliance range for 1987 model year.
