Bertone’s Marcello Gandini’s futuristic wedge-shaped sports car wowed motor show visitors in Genève in 1971, making it into production in LP400 form with enlarged scoops on the side for air intake in 1974. Characteristic “beetle wing” doors. Upgrade to LP400S in 1978, with optional rear wing. Larger 4·8-litre engine (455 bhp) for LP500S in 1982, 5000QV (quattrovalvole) from 1985, and 25th anniversary model with restyle 1988–9. Known for being the fastest production car of its time if official figures are to be believed; Autocar confirmed this in the 1980s. Had stiff competition from Ferrari 512 BB, also vying for the title.
