1997 Kia Sephia GS.jpg

Kia Sephia (B5K/B6K). 1992–7 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, 1498, 1598 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1498, 1839 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Finding that sales in the C-sector were dropping with the Capital, Kia developed the Sephia with Mazda input—Mazda parent Ford had worked closely with the firm over the Pride and an aborted off-road utility project (UW52). Mazda Familia (BG) platform. Launched 1992 to favourable reviews in Korea for its lively performance and standard equipment. Actually quite roomy and well built, though dull styling and plasticky interior meant reaction was more underwhelming in export markets. Good ride but road and wind noise apparent; steering not that well weighted. By international standards, performance could be described only as mediocre. Facelift to ‘New Sephia’ in 1994, with addition of 1·8 DOHC on home market. Hatchback delayed to 1996. Dual-airbag option in final year. Exported to some markets as Kia Mentor.

Manufacturing location: Hwasung, Korea

Marque: Kia | Model: Kia Sephia | Predecessor: Kia Capital | Successor: Kia Sephia II
