From AutocadeOriginally a Hyundai Stellar spin-off, the Sonata grew to a unique model line. At launch, the Y2 Sonata was Hyundai’s largest car, competing in the executive class against models such as the Ford Scorpio. As Hyundai kept the growth of its cars to a more sensible level than its Japanese or European rivals, Sonata eventually became a Honda Accord competitor, occupying the mid-sized sector. Originally a dull, cheaply put together car, Hyundai constantly improved the Sonata’s offering, so much so that its elegant NF version scooped awards. YF gained more flowing, expressive styling at the behest of Hyundai’s CEO.
