Beginning in aircraft, Changhe diversified to cars in 1982, when it began licensed manufacture of the Suzuki Carry microvan, as well as minibuses of its own design. Changhe–Suzuki Automobiles Co. Ltd. was formally established in 1999. As the 21st century unfolded, Changhe made vehicles of its own design while Changhe–Suzuki was the joint venture with the Japanese firm, making Suzuki-based models under licence. Most Changhe cars have small displacements, covering the lower end of the market. By 2013 Changhe had restructured after an unprofitable period and became part of BAIC, with the Beijing firm holding 70 per cent.
