2004 Volvo S40.jpg

Volvo S40. 1995–2004 (prod. 473,581). 4-door saloon. F/F, 1588, 1731, 1855, 1948 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1870 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Replacement for 400-series, built at NedCar plant shared with Mitsubishi onMitsubishi Carisma platform. Originally to be called S4, but name quickly changed to S40 after complaints from Audi, which was already using the tag. Plain, uninspiring transportation, not quite as well built as Volvos further up the range, though safe, being first car to earn four stars in Euro NCAP safety tests. Facelift in 2001. Estate version called V40, covered separately.
