Volvo 480 ES. 1985–95 (prod. 80,464). 3-door coupé. F/F, 1721, 1998 cm³ (I4 OHC). Stylish coupé, a departure from squarish models of the 1970s and 1980s. Styling harked back to 1800 ES of the early 1970s, and an alternative to the hot hatches of the era. Fairly rare, despite advanced specification, space utilization and overall design. First Volvo with transverse engine driving front wheels; composites used in front-end construction, side intrusion bars and follow-me-home headlamps ahead of their time. Later models fitted with two-litre. Attractive convertible prototype shown but never entered production.

Manufacturing location: Born, Sittard-Geleen, Netherlands

Marque: Volvo | Predecessor: Volvo 1800ES | Successor: Volvo C30
