Volvo 343/Volvo 345/Volvo 340. 1976–91 (prod. 1,136,689). 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon. F/R, 1397 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1721, 1986 cm³ petrol, 1595 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). DAF P900 model brought to life under Volvo, with some Renault engines (two-litre from Volvo). Optional CVT automatic. Stylish (for mid-1970s) Michelotti lines, small bustle on boot despite hatchback configuration for three- and five-door, a feature copied later by Ford Escort Mk III. Five-door (345) from 1979. Original 343 and 345 renamed 340 in 1982. Four-door sedan added 1983 (deleted 1989). Facelift in 1984, diesel added. Three-door deleted 1990. Five-door somehow managed to remain in range till 1991 despite advent of 440 and 460 “replacements”, with strong popularity in UK. Robust compact car, though critics will call it uninspiring.
