Volvo 240/Volvo 242/Volvo 244/Volvo 245. 1974–93 (prod. 2,862,573, incl. 260 series). 2- and 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/R, 1784, 1986, 2127, 2316 cm³ petrol, 2383 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC), 2664, 2849 cm³ (V6 OHC). Hugely improved version of the 140 series, with passenger safety its most marketable point at the time. MacPherson struts up front, and rack and pinion steering. Usually with four-cylinder engines, though sixes could be ordered in some years, despite the 24x nomenclature (the central digit was meant to reflect the number of cylinders). All versions called 240 from 1982 model year, with two-doors cancelled after 1984 model year. Numbers steadily decreased into the end of the 1980s, with production finally ceasing in 1993. Never with startling performance, though handling acceptable, and well known for being durable. Estates were cavernous, even against competitors toward the end of the run.
