Volvo 142/Volvo 144/Volvo 145. 1967–74 (prod. 1,251,371). 2- and 4-door saloon, 5-door estate, 5-door high-roof estate. F/R, 1778, 1986 cm³ (I4 OHV). First of the boxy Volvos, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, replacing venerable Amazon series. Announced 1966 in all four Scandinavian capitals, and a major step forward for Volvo cars. Dual-circuit brake system. Two-door from late 1967; combi from following year. Larger engine from 1969. Mid-term changes for 1971, including wheelbase increase (2 cm) and new trim levels. Retractable seat belts followed in 1972, tail lights from 240-series for the saloons, and larger bumpers for final year (1974). Gained a reputation for toughness, though not performance.
