First of the boxy Volvos, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, replacing venerable Amazon series. Announced 1966 in all four Scandinavian capitals, and a major step forward for Volvo cars. Dual-circuit brake system. Two-door from late 1967; combi from following year. Larger engine from 1969. Mid-term changes for 1971, including wheelbase increase (2 cm) and new trim levels. Retractable seat belts followed in 1972, tail lights from 240-series for the saloons, and larger bumpers for final year (1974). Gained a reputation for toughness, though not performance.
