Volkswagen Polo (Typ 86C). 1981–94 (prod. n/a). 2- and 3-door saloon, 3-door coupé. F/F, 1043, 1093, 1272 cm³ petrol, 1272, 1398 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). All-new Polo released initially with three-door hatchback with upright “bread van” tailgate. More conventional hatchback announced 1982, called Polo Coupé. Two-door saloon called Volkswagen Derby until 1985, when it was absorbed into Polo range; called Polo Classic in Switzerland. Diesel from 1986, upgraded to 1·4 in 1990. Major facelift for 1990 to Polo 2F (Facelift), including new interior. Supercharged G40 model using 1·3-litre petrol engine released 1985, developing 113 PS. Fairly worthy with better build quality than competitors though dated toward the end of its run.
